Can 1 person pilot a 38′ motor yacht around Seattle and Puget Sound?

This is a follow-up to my previous question, how long to yacht from Gig Harbor to Seattle to the Pacific. I have already recieved a fantastic answer. This is to clarify some things and ask a couple more little questions. It should be noted that I know next to nothing about yachts and boating. I tried looking at maritime charts, but to me they are indecipherable. The Yacht I speak of is a 38′ Royal Commodore motor yacht with twin diesel 310 horsepower Volvo engines (this is not set though…if you have a better suggestion I would love to hear it). I’m assuming an average speed of 20 knots. If it takes about an hour from Gig Harbor to Seattle, does that include taking the yacht from its mooring at it’s Marina and docking in Seattle? Can one person do this by himself? As for the trip from Seattle to the Pacific, can one person do this by himself? Is it too dangerous to go it alone? Thanks so much for the fantastic answer. I was astounded by your knowledge and my luck. Thanks!!!!

What does it cost to get into sailing, boat ownership, cruising? ?

I’m familiar with the costs of cars, trucks, motorcycles and even a bit of airplanes. What are the licensing requirements and costs of learning to sail? What are the insurance requirements, especially in the U.S.? What are the registration/documentation costs and requirements? Maintenance expenses = ? There are plenty of books that address these matters for airplane ownership and flying, but I can’t find any that answer these for sailing.

The kind of sailing I’d like to do would be first, starting out with a dinghy on inland lakes. Later, if finances, health, time, etc. permit doing some blue water cruising around North & South America. Some of it possibly single-handed as experience permits.

What’s the maintenance fee of a boat/yacht?

Posted by Admin on October 17th, 2009 under Yachting Tags: , , , , , , ,  •  3 Comments

I’m thinking about getting a 2006 45′ boat. I have an ocean as my backyard and thinking about having a boat slip built so that I don’t have to rent a marina. Would that save me money in the long run. If so, by how much?

So what’s the resulting annual maintenance if I don’t have to pay for a slip at the marina?

What do the maintenance fee go to exactly?
Also, what are some high quality boat/yacht brand?
I’m looking for a comfort boat/yacht. But prefer something with some speed 30-40 knots, but that’s not mandatory.

boat buying?

Posted by Admin on October 15th, 2009 under Yachting Tags: , , ,  •  4 Comments

Could anyone help? I want to buy a boat/yacht primarily for cruising but would want fair performance. The trouble is I am limited to 21ft length and 3ft draft. Have been looking at Hunter Horizons and Duettes.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thanks
